One Mind Fits All: The Emphasis on Technology & Its Erasure of Human Thought

Written by:

As part of my final assignment for my Foundations of Digital Content Grad studies class, I wrote my first ever white paper on how technology (specifically AI) disrupts attention and is impacting our ability to think creatively and independently. This assignment felt challenging, yet rewarding and I am proud of the way I compiled everything I have learned into one concise 15 page paper. Below is an excerpt from the beginning of the paper to give you a taste of the topic.

“In early 2023, when Open AI was still in its infancy, I was at the mall with my high school best friend to prepare for our senior prom and to do some much-needed retail therapy. As we walked into a dress store to hunt for the perfect dress, my friend stopped dead in her tracks, and pulled out her phone, typing away rapidly. “What happened, are you okay?” I asked as I peered over her shoulder. To my shock, she was engaged in a back-and-forth conversation with Chat GPT trying to figure out what prom dress she should buy. Her rapid-fire questions asked about the color, the cut, if she should go for sequins or satin and more. I rolled my eyes and returned my focus back to the rack of sparkly dresses, saying “You could have figured that all out on your own, you know, or even I could’ve told you that.” She shrugged me off and joined me back in the search. I didn’t think much of this interaction back then, since I could have never anticipated that AI usage for trivial questions like my friend’s in the dress shop would become so normalized, especially in the workplace”.
